A Whole New World

Or well, at least a whole new blog layout ... uhm sort of :)  I wanted to play around a little bit and start getting used to a different style. The old one was getting a bit lackluster if I do say so myself. Even though let's be real, I haven't changed anything aside from moving things from the center to the right and added a few new colors.

Hey ... baby steps.

Although I probably should mention this won't stay .. because I already don't like it, but I'm getting tired and I'm too sleepy to change it again. And for my many email followers, you probably won't notice any change at all. So you can stop reading now :)

I'm planning to team up with a bloggy designer sometime soon and do the whole shebang ... but for now subtle changes will fill my constant need for change. I'm currently playing with aligning left vs aligning right or center and various fonts. Riveting, I know.
Thoughts on ways to make it an easier read? And/or layout suggestions?  Okay, well that's a little insight into my wild Saturday night. Muah!

Mommyhood Musthaves: 0-3 Months

Alrightyroo. Mommyhood is in full swing and I'm learning all things baby every day. Just like everyone says, it has proven to be one of the most challenging yet rewarding roles I have ever experienced. But I'm quickly learning there are SEVERAL people whom have also taken on the mommy challenge and have put their entrepreneurial skills to work in creating fancy little devices that help to make a day in mommyland MUCH more pleasant. Praise sweet baby Jesus for these people, and these items.

My mommyhood must have items for the first 3 months of life:

Mommyhood Musthaves
Here's the deal. Bennett is a bit of a spitty baby, and he's also entered the drooling and blowing bubbles era of his life. Therefore, drool and spit up have graced nearly every item in our home that Bennett comes in contact with. Sheer bliss, let me tell you. Moreover, his crib sheets, which he spends a good portion of his time around because little man is an A+ sleeper get a good amount of drool action. And, these sheet savers do just what they're meant to do: Save mommy from having to wash his *nearly impossible to take on and off* sheets. Cheap and effective, just my style.

A baby monitor is a baby monitor right?
 WRONG.
I put hubs in charge of picking out the baby monitor from day one. I was all about selecting a bazillion adorable must have items for the baby registries, but didn't want to spend a bunch of time reading reviews about monitors, so Shane became head of that ship. He decided to go with this guy and we're really happy with it. It's got incredible range, a fun video doohinky and the best part ... it's got an app so Hubs can check on little buddy while he's at work and see his sweet boy napping. Plus it's a nice feature if you need to run out to get the mail or something and want to check in on your phone without having to have the little monitor screen. Or late at night when I'm on the computer I can just check in via the web and hubs can keep his video in the basement, etc. ... you get the idea. It's pretty cool. We also looked into the Apple monitor ... and that one seems pretty sweet too. I'd be pleased with either.

These little packets make getting out the door quickly a breeze. The little compartment formula cases are also great, but having these spill proof packets ready to go are great for any diaper bag.

These have been AWESOME this summer. They are light enough to keep BUBs swaddled without making him too hot, and they are long enough so even the worst swaddle job seems alright. Plus, Bennett is so active he often manages to get the blanket all up in his face and these blankets are so light he can breathe through them and I don't have a heart attack thinking he's smothering himself!

I'm a big fan of this baby tub. The lining in the back helps to grip the babe and keep him in place during bath time. It's got the perfect tilt, so he's upright, but still in the water. I'm sure you could live without this one, but every baby needs a bath and we love ours :)

Holy, best thing ever. This guy has been a life saver. For starters, after you have a C-section the doctors really recommend you don't go up and down the stairs very often. So, seeing as though our bedroom is on the 2nd floor ... this little number was easily placed downstairs in my makeshift bedroom! Additionally, it came with an awesome little bassinet attachment that Bennett used for the first month or so. I didn't want to purchase a bassinet, so this little number was EXCELLENT. And last but certainly not least, it also has a changing table attachment which is clutch for travel and downstairs diaper changes.

These may just be a little baby boy necessity, but similar to the sheet saver, these make clean up a breeze. Although we've managed to get a grasp on the golden showers, Bennett still manages to surprise us every now and again. These guys allow me to just swap out a new one, but still keep the actual changing pad on the changer thing-a-ma-jig for a little longer. Less laundry = happy Katie. But seriously, newborn laundry is out of control! Summer Infant

My little man LOVES to be swaddled. I mean LOVES it. These are his nighttime swaddles and they work perfectly. If he's sleeping nearly 8 hours, I'd say these wraps are doing their job. And just as important as it is for little man to sleep ... hubs and I are also sleeping. Winner winner chicken dinner.

My cousin MaKenzie and her husband Ross used to call their swing the third parent when they had their first little one (they now have 3 ... we've got a play date next week, so just hold your horses and I promise to gush all the deetz). Nevertheless, they were DEAD ON. The swing is indeed the third parent. An extra set of great hands that Bennett loves to be in. Yahoo!

This one is just fun. Whether it's a fun distraction waiting at a stoplight or a fun reminder little man is in the backseat even when he's sleeping ... it's fun. And it's a great peace of mind everything is A-ok back there. Plus it helps ME find his paci when he's dropped it and I can't see all the way around the car seat canopy.

Graco Sound Machine
A real life baby whisperer in the form of a device. Bennett LOVES, LOVES the sound of water or white noise. Hubs and I also both rely heavily on the Sound Sleeper app on our iPhones. But this guys does the trick to keep little man a snoozin' through the night and keeps him calm during a melt down. It also plays great tunes, and you can even hook up your iPod and it can be a speaker for 3am dance parties when you're so deliriously tired that's the only thing that makes sense ... not that we've done that or anything :)

Bouncer Seat
This is actually the Snugabunny ... which conveniently can also become a swing ... we have the monkey version ... but bottom line the bouncer is a good friend.  Similar to the swing, it's another pair of hands.  And it also just helps out when Bennett doesn't want to lay down. Plus, we used this on the boat and it helped to absorb the shock of wake, which made for some great times. Bennett also uses this as his "TV chair" when I plop him down for some Baby Einstein for about 10-15 minutes.

So there you have it gang. My current favorite mommy must haves for the first couple months of BUB's life! I'll be sure to check-in in a couple of months  once our interests change, but today we're happy with these little doodads :)

Bennett: 3 Months

Here we go again. He's 3 months old (as of September 28th ... I'm slacking I know). The first quarter of his life is officially complete.
Bennett Bernard, here's what is happening.

How big are you?

  • At your last appointment on September 17th you were 11 weeks old.
    • Height: 24.25 inches (75th percentile)
    • Weight: 11lbs 14oz (25th percentile)
    • Head: 41 inches (50th percentile)
  • Still Long and lean little bubba! Can you teach me how to be that way? :)

What's your temperament?

  • Still showing us all sorts of personality, and starting to become a bit more finicky about your likes and dislikes, including who's holding you.
  • Still loving to be held and being swaddled is sometimes the perfect cure to calming you down. Although you pretty much only like to be held upright now.
  • Continuing to find your voice. You actually love to scream now, and we laugh hysterically. You've also learned how to cough, and we swear you do it just to get a rise out of people.
  • Your schedule is becoming more and more patterned. You sleep all night, wake up for an hour and back down for at least 1-2 hours. That's something you DO NOT mess with :)
  • Your smiles are still the best part of my day. But you've added giggling to the mix. Daddy and I are always trying to find new ways to make you laugh. Just last night he was telling me a (semi-serious) story at dinner and for whatever reason you thought it was HYSTERICAL. Your giggle is insanely awesome. Gosh, you're cool.

How much are you eating?

  • Feeding amounts keep growing too!  We're now anywhere from 4-6 oz (about every 2.5-3 hours)
  • Still enjoying your 1oz freak out (even though now we're letting you have 2 oz before even trying and you still FREAK). We still burp you after every ounce or two because you have the tendency to be a spitty baby, and this seems to help. However, you are NOT a happy camper. HATE TO BE BURPED. Your daddy and I refer to it as the First Ounce Freak Out. Whenever will you learn we promise to give the bottle back, we're just trying to help?! :)

What are you sporting?

  • Still rocking number 1 diapers, still Pampers people and they seem to keep you extra happy. Still a big fan of that blue line that let's us know if you're wet or not.
  • Avent paci's for the win. They're in every room of our house.
  • You're rocking 0-3 month or 3 month attire. You've even worn a couple of 6 month items. (this picture however you are wearing a 0-3 month gerber onesie and it is tiiighhhhht)
  • Pants are also making an appearance in your wardrobe. For most of summer you sported only onesies, because it was so hot and that was all you needed. But as fall creeps into the bluegrass we're adding pants. Your khakis are my favorite :) hehe

How are you sleeping?

  • Rockstar sleeper. ROCKSTAR.
  • Your naps are starting to become more sporadic, and seem to be more cat naps than actual sleep sessions now-a-days
    • Your best and longest nap is after your morning feeding - we can usually get at least an hour, sometimes 2 out of you.
    • Before this nap is also one of our favorite times with you. Right before daddy goes to work and after you've had your morning bottle you are the SWEETEST little munchkin in all the land.
  • Nighttime sleeper extraordinaire
    • You're sleeping THROUGH THE NIGHT! Consistently, I might add.
      • About 10-11pm to 7-8am
    • You've learned how to roll over in your Velcro swaddle-me at nighttime and it freaks me and daddy out .. so we're transitioning you to a Halo Sleep Sack .. that way you feel somewhat swaddled, but your little arms are free.

Bennett Likes and Dislikes:

  • Likes:
    • Tummy time
    • Your jungle gym
    • Baby Einstein YouTube videos
    • BATH TIME.  You LOVVVEE bath time. But you have now learned that getting out is not as fun and you are NOT a happy camper when bath time is over.
    • Anyone talking or singing to you.
    • Being outside. You are enamored with trees.
    • Your hands and fists. They are constantly finding their way into your mouth ... can't keep em out!
    • The Baby Bjorn.  Daddy and I underutilized this in the first few months of your life, but now that you are getting bigger and stronger and can hold your head up a little more you love to ride around and face outward to see everyone.
  • Dislikes:
    • Being burped - "the first ounce freak out"
      • you are NOT a good burper and you're super pissed feeding time is being interrupted :)
    • Shots.  Regardless of how good they are for you, they're stupid and they make both you and your mommy cry.

Fun moments, favorite notes, Bennett quirks & Milestones:
  • You're officially on watch at all times. You're rolling over from back to front and front to back like it's your job, so you can no longer be left unattended anywhere!
  • We went to our lake house at Cumberland and you joined us for your first boat ride.
  • We ventured to the Kentucky State Fair.
  • You went to Emmie and Brody's Tee-Ball game and told us how excited you were to play one day!
  • Your first Bengals game! WHO DEY BABY! The Bengals brought home the win over the Packers with an end of the game interception. You looked a little thugged out because we had to buy you a fresh beanie on the way up, but you fit in quite well :)
  • We had an overnight adventure to meet your new baby cousins for the first time at Aunt Toby's house!
  • Capturing your smiles via camera is still a personal challenge of mine and I get wayyy too excited when I get a good one - here's my favorite this month. Even though you look like you're a year old thanks to the collared shirt and the appearance you're sitting up on your own. I love it.
  • We went Apple Picking and played at the orchard.
  • You met your Aunt Debbie and visited her at work at the University of Cincinnati.
  • You visited your Uncle Max and some of his roommates at their gross apartment at Xavier University.

You're sure earning your keep around here little man. Wrapping me further and further around that little finger of yours :) ...
And wrapping yourself further and further into the blanket we tried to use for pictures today that you were NOT cooperating with ;)

Baby Mickey Mouse

Honestly, is there anything cuter than baby costumes? Little people dressed up in adorable outfits, I die.   Halloween is just around the corner and with baby Bennett on hand, choosing a Halloween costume has become such a BIG DEAL!

Mind you, Halloween is always a big deal in our household and I've talked about it before. But with a baby in the mix ... it's an even BIGGER deal.  I'm so torn with what route to take, but Hubs said last night he wants it to be simple and easy when it comes to Baby B, so I'm thinking some sort of adorable hat should do the trick.  Here are some front runners from my latest Etsy search:

Candy Corn - a fall classic and a Halloween staple. This could would be super simple and I could just throw on a white sleeper so little man is warm.

Mickey Mouse - again, add a white onesie and a black nose and we've got an adorable little mouse.

Cowboy Bennett - I've got a cute pair of fleece cowboy boots and again, add the white onesie and voila.

Scarecrow - I love the little fringe at the bottom of the legs. Again, white onesie and adorbs.
Bennett's first Halloween. Now, granted I will eat all of his candy which will completely wreck my post-baby diet, but his little outfit will make it totally worth it.
