I Heart You

Ahhh Valentine's Day ... your hearts, your red and pink romantic decor, your endless amounts of love, your oversized teddy bears, your dozen long stemmed roses, you and all your smoochies and I love yous - for those of you in love with someone to share it with, you're such a happy day.

Truth be told, I've never been over the moon about Valentine's Day. I'm one of those "it's so overrated, such a Hallmark holiday, blah blah blah" people. But, I am also a girl ... and therefore expect SOME kind of special attention, even if I say differently (insert winky face emoji). Aside from our fourth (I think) Valentine's Day when Shane booked some super swanky preset dinner menu reservation, at some over priced restaurant downtown (which I enjoyed of course .. just thought it was worth mentioning .. ha), we've kept our Vday's pretty simple. A homemade heart shaped pizza has been our favorite one to date ... maybe we'll reenact that at some point and let our little man make his own too.  But I dunno, to me it's just more fun to make an ordinary day special .. and that's what we've always done.

This year however, I'm looking at Valentine's day in a whole new light ... as a parent!  It's making it really fun. I'm imagining my kid(s) a little older and putting together super cute Valentine packages for them to take to school. And giving them a special little Valentine gift from daddy and me. And maybe even splitting up and letting Daddy take his little princess to dinner (if we ever have a girl) and I'll get to take the boy on a dinner date. It makes me smile picturing it all.

Anyways, before I get ahead of myself, I'm also focusing on fun ways to make it special this year. And by special I simply mean making some fun treats for us to munch on next week. I made these little nuggets a couple of years ago and they were so fun!  I'm so excited to start building traditions with our wee one.  I'm going to let him help me in the kitchen this year, and plan to every year after that (until he has his own little lady to take out one day, sniff, tear, sigh).  But while I've got him all to myself that's just what we'll do. And giggle and make a might mess because, Valentine's Day and toddlers and love. Here are some of my favorite contenders for this year's Valentine treat.
Valentine Treats
How on earth will I ever decide? So many adorable sweet treats!  Maybe I'll just have to make them all ... I'm sure Bennett wouldn't mind having dessert for every meal next week. Ha!

Here are the links if you're interested in check them out yourself. Which one would ya'll pick?
Happy love month to all. Smoochies.

Australia: Travel

Man, am I the only one who cried during what felt like EVERY commercial break that existed last night?! I mean I get it, tug at the heart strings and make and impact … I am a marketing major after all, but good grief!  Can I get a little humor or something, puhlease?!  At least my girl Katy Perry stepped in with some trippiness to take my mind off the tear jerkers!  Although, if I'm being honest, I was a little disappointed in her opening song attire. I feel like she could have stepped up her game and gone for a little less Katniss Everdeen in her opening skit and a little more love singing without a track … regardless … she's still hoot.

Anywhoodles, I'm here today to check in and FINALLY begin to share the long awaited Australia recap posts!  I don't know about you, but I have been so excited to share this trip with ya'll and it's about dang time I got back into some kind of routine so I can recap this puppy! Geesh! Who blogs about Christmas in February?! Apparently me :)

Alas,
So to start it off, let's talk about the travel shall we? I plan to do a separate post for all the gimmicks and tricks that helped along the way, for anyone that is traveling long distance with a toddler in the near future. In hopes SOMETHING may help them.

We headed to the Louisville, KY airport on Wednesday, December 17 around 12:00 in the afternoon. Our plan was to take a van cab because we had SO. MUCH. STUFF. Buuut that ended up falling through, so we called our buddy, Jason, and thank goodness he came through in a pinch (Gracias Señor). We loaded up his SUV and rushed off to the airport. After we finally unloaded all of our belongings and made it through security we grabbed a quick bite before we settled in for the long haul.
We took a (what seemed quick) two and a half hour flight to Dallas, TX where we had a 4 hour layover before boarding our LONG flight to Sydney, Australia. Bennett worked the airports like a pro.
We discovered the American Express lounge and took advantage of a few "free" cocktails and goodies while we waited.
Bennett loved the kids room and all the free apples :)
Soon after we heard the call to board our plane. We boarded an airbus and learned we were taking the longest direct flight in the world, on the largest plane (double decker) that flys. Woot!
Boarding the plane, so excited to start our adventure!
We meticulously placed all of our things (this took embarrassingly too long), got all settled in, ate some questionable airplane food and hung as best we could on an airplane.
A few hours later we changed boy into his PJs so he would be nice and comfy and turned on some Mickey Mouse with his iPad holder (GOD BLESS THIS INVENTION).
He was so into his show and being so good. Shane and I looked at each other and shared mutual looks of "HA, maybe we were worried for nothing?!"
But in true toddler fashion, Bennett quickly reminded us not to speak too soon. The airplane quickly became his jungle gym.

But luckily, after he pounced and played he quickly tuckered out and nodded off.
Again, hubs and I shared "Huh, this ain't gonna be so bad glances."
We busted out his port-a-crib (similar here) and nestled him in.
Then, we added a little canopy to block out the light, high fived one another and turned on a movie of our own to "enjoy" the flight.
Ahem, WRONG. Hit that 3:00am toss and turn routine our son usually carries out (he often wakes up, repositions and falls back to sleep) but, mix it with a tiny airplane seat and a dark strange place and we had a full fledged EPIC meltdown on our hands. I'm talking an hour straight of inconsolable crying. Add receiving dirty looks from the other passengers whom's snooze sessions were being interrupted and you've got two sweaty parents that are fumbling all over the place. It felt like we were back in the newborn phase trying anything and everything to get him settled.

At this point we agreed we just needed to deal it with and opted to take turns and try to each get a few hours of shut eye.  Little man was making it very clear he had zero intention of getting back in his seat, much less head back to sleep. So, hubs took first shift and proceeded to let him walk up and down the stairs at the back of the plane for the next three hours.

It was a lot of up and down, back and forth from this point forward for the next 12ish hours and we lived to talk about it. Thank goodness my child is entertained by an iPad and wore headphones .. that's the only thing I can talk positively about.
One of our favorite parts of the flight was the camera at the back of the tail of the plane. We're getting close!
 We landed in Sydney!
Not for long however, soon we met up with PaPaw, GoGo and Max to board another plane and head to Cairns!
FINALLY! No more planes for a few days! 31 hours of travel later.
And naturally, my child wants to get back into an airplane at the airport. Ha!
We made it, and our fatheads made it too :)  Let's do this Aussie Land!
Next up, Cairns and the beauty of the Australian Rainforest in North Queensland.

Nashville Mommy

Forewarning: these are not complete sentences I'm pretty sure. Everything is jumbled together. And the writing on this blog lately resembles much of my current life: piled and thrown together in a big box - which means it's either non existent, or just mixed together.  But that's all I can get out right now, so it's going to have to do. Bare with me :)

I have so much to catch ya'll up on. So, so much. Things like Australian, Max moving to NYC, updates on Nashville, Me going back to school (yes, you read that right), selling the house, etc. etc. But for sake of my sanity and the length of this post, I'm going to keep it short and sweet and give you the ultra condensed version and some inside scoop on what's been happening. Bottom line, if you want to skip the bullet points ... we're in Tennessee now :)

  • Our Louisville house is under contract and the closing date is set to be sometime between the last week of February and the first week of March
  • On that note, we've moved out all of the "needs" and left behind everything else (i.e. furniture, decor, doubles, etc)
  • We packed up our 5x8 U-haul trailer and loaded down both of our cars last Sunday 1/25
  • Shane had a sales meeting Monday morning and after Bennett's nap we hit the road to head south down I-65
    • I chatted with MaKenzie the majority of the way, and it was just what I needed to calm my nerves and make me feel at peace (by the way, she is due with baby girl #4 in 22 days ... EEEEK! be still my heart)
  • We're staying in a corporate lease on a month to month contract at an apartment complex close to downtown (it includes all furniture, utilities, appliances, etc) - so it's made for an easy transition
    • This is also the time I should note we're on the third floor ... with a toddler and Maggie ... right about now I really miss my garage and mudroom
    • Whyyyyy does he always move so fast, but when I am loaded down with armfuls of groceries he decides to take his sweet time and inspect each and every step?!
  • Most of this week has been spent unpacking boxes, googling where the closet grocery store is (uhm, what is Harris Teeter? ... well know I know. And I also know they have fancy parking spaces, and that I like!)
  • Maggie is anxious as all get out and is having the hardest time of all of us adjusting. Bless her sweet heart. We will get through this Mags.
  • Hubs and I started watching Girls on HBO and we're hooked. It's helping to keep our minds off what is actually
  • We'll be back and forth a lot this next month, but we're here and a serious house hunt is underway to get us out of the apartment and into our new home!

Mainly, I just want to say thank you to all of those that helped along the way, for how you have supported our family in our move to Nashville. It's a BIG step for us and the way that you all have surrounded us with prayers, helping hands and encouragement along the way means more than words can express.

There is a lot of sadness, grieving, and processing that has come along with moving away from our family, friends, and the state we've always lived in. Many days, in the midst of all of that, I’ve gotten a text, phone call, email or a comment from one of you that would be exactly what I needed to hear right then, and I want you to know I (we) appreciate it. And Bennett thinks it's just dapper :)

We've put down roots in Louisville, KY and have given ourselves and Bennett  a strong sense of home. But, the goal is now focused on hoping we can put down roots in Nashville, too.  And we're excited about the opportunity to do so. We can have two hometowns.  I keep telling myself we can make road trips back to Louisville whenever we want; that our friends will come visit in Nashville (if you're reading this, please come and visit); and most importantly, that people do this all the time. It's Nashville, only a few hours away. It’s not like it was Colorado or California or anything.  It isn't far. If it doesn't work out, we can always move back.  Maybe I'm just trying to feel better about pulling this switch, but that’s what I keep telling myself as the time has come to go.

Anyway, it's been a long week. One filled with lots of tears of sadness along with excited eagerness. We're starting a new chapter and we're ready. But change is hard, nevertheless.  And at the end of it all, I'm mostly happy we have the love and support from everyone we do. We love you.

So here we go ... Cheers Music City ... We now live in Nashville, Tennessee!

(P.S. the Vols are still a terrible orange color and I will forever proudly yell: GO CATS!)

SLACKER.

Hi, I'm Katie and I'm a slacker.

I have so much to recap/share/discuss and all I am currently capable of telling you about is how much of a slacker I am. Ugh. I promise to get back in the swing of things and dish all things land down under, packing, moving, Bennett, and a little extra hooplah sprinkled in. But today, this is all I have.

Bare with me, K?!  Love you lots.
