The Perfect Peace-out Paci Plan

How's that title for some alliteration ya'll? Pretty proud if I do say so myself ... *smiles and shrugs shoulders* but anyways, back to the topic at hand. The Perfect Peace-out Paci Plan. Remember like 15 days ago when I was all emotional about my first born turning three?  Well as if that wasn't enough we've now closed another chapter. The paci is finally gone. Funny, because it was a chapter I said several times would be closed before he turned two, and now a year later it's finally happening. I'm a sucker (no pun intended) what can I say?

Truth be told, we're kind of strict in regards to how often our kiddos even get a paci, but the fact that we let this linger until three years old makes me go - uhm you're actually not that strict Katie, but good try! HA! Regardless, our parenting model with the pacifier has gone a little something like this:
  • The first three months of their lives both of my kiddos rocked soothies. I was told they were better for nipple confusion while breastfeeding, so we started using them.
  • And then between months 3-4 we started introducing "normal" pacis like an avent or nuk, so they were more orthodontic friendly when they started sprouting teeth.
  • Around their first birthday we start the car and crib only rule; and they are only allowed to have them either in the car (we keep it clipped to their carseat) or when they are sleeping in their crib at nap or bedtime.
  • And then around age two we had planned to remove them all together, but instead we just removed the car paci and left the crib one in play. I was too pregnant to deal with the emotional side of things, he was sleeping great and we just didn't make it happen.
  • So now, at age three we officially remove all pacis. (Tear, sad face, I know it's good for him but wahhh it means he's getting even older!)
Hubs and I talked a lot about it and how we were going to do it. Here's the thing with Bennett, he's INCREDIBLY logical. He wants to know why, how, when, etc. when it comes to EVERYTHING. He is always looking for an explanation of why something happened. Or how it goes down. So, simply telling him no more paci in our opinion would have never worked (well it would have, but there would have been 1,000 questions a long with it that would have made it messy). There has to be a reason WHY. We have to explain what happens, where something goes, how it's used in the future. He seems to respond much better to this type of logical thinking vs. just telling him something. So ding ding ding, enter CoCoa, our fun little Elf On The Shelf from Christmas time!

Bennett was fascinated with CoCoa and his adventures throughout our house last Christmas. So much so that several months ago he found a small piece of cotton (let's be honest, it was probably a dust bunny) and came running too me saying "Mommy! Mommy! I found one of CoCoa's socks! He must have been here checking on me!" Again, with the logic and imagination. This kid, I tell ya. Always keeping me on my toes! So, it's become a thing. We chat about CoCoa frequently and every time we find dust bunnies instead of being reminded to clean, I'm simply reminded "you better watch out, you better not cry" because Santa is always watching!

So, Hubs and I agreed Cocoa needed to be a part of the 'peace-out paci plan' and we I created a fun little to-do to complete our mission. First, I needed to scour the craft room and produce a small box, some construction paper, some pens and a ribbon. Check yes. Had it all.
Then I had to gather Bennett's paci's that have somehow managed to survive the last three years. Two pacis. Literally, he's had both of these since he was first born and somehow we managed to hang on to both of them. If I had to put them in order of favorites, the "hi" paci is the all time favorite. When we would choose his paci out of his bowl he would always choose that one. The mustache paci was more for silly moods, or when the "hi" paci would get lost in his sheets or was being cleaned or something.
After I gathered all of the items, we came downstairs and crafted our letter to CoCoa.
While I was writing and Bennett was listening intently, he got very excited and exclaimed, "Mommy! I'm going to give a present to CoCoa! I'm going to give him a car to say thank you for all of my Christmas presents!" I mean ya'll could this boy's heart be any sweeter?! He picked out one of his monster trucks and placed it in his box.
Next, he added his letter.
And finally, in went his pacis.
And then he closed up the box as best he could ...
And handed it over to me for finishing touches. "To: CoCoa @ The North Pole; Love: Bennett (with his personal squiggle signature and the date: 7.7.16" and then did his best attempt at a smile, because well, he's three.
"CoCoa is coming tonight?!?!"
"Oh yea! He's going to love my present. I'm so excited!"
And then he took his box and ran to place it on the porch for a CoCoa pick up while he was sleeping.

And there it sat. Waiting for CoCoa to pick up and another chapter in his boyhood was closed. Another item his emotional mommy is crying over. Another reminder that life is so fleeting. Another 'thing' that makes me wish for superhero powers that would allow me to freeze time and bottle up little three year old Bennett forever. Another reminder to cherish every single moment, because 'these are the days'. We're living them, right now. Right this very moment. The time is now, we're in it. And before we know it, we're going to be the ones looking at the young mama's in the grocery stores watching them roll their eyes  when we tell them to enjoy their screaming baby. We're in the blur folks. The most beautiful blur I could have ever imagined. And goodness, another reminder to my poor husband. Sweetheart it might be time to start saving some money to pay for a trip around the world; because that's the only way you're going to be able to get me to leave that little boy's dorm room freshman year. I will not go willingly. I will not.

Lainey Lou ~ Month 8

She's 8 months old. She's 8 months old. She's 8 months old. Maybe if I write it a few more times it'll help me grasp the understanding that yes, she really is 8 months old? She's 8 months old. Nope, still doesn't help. But regardless of if I can comprehend or not ... she's 8 months old (7.1.16).

Lainey Lou ~ Months 6 and 7

It was a big month little miss! And next month is going to have some fun updates too I can already tell. Your spunkiness shines more and more everyday.

You're rolling everywhere, and mixing it with getting up on all fours and rocking!  I'm going to give you one more week until you're crawling.

You are still drooling non stop but still no teefers!

You are the sweetest child ever, but when you want something you let us know. Your temper is short. But it's still pretty cute. You have so much spunk.
And your blue eyes. Holy moly. They are beautiful.

And per usual these sweeties crashed the photo shoot and watched from afar.
And once Lainey caught a glimpse of them there was no hope in returning to get any close ups of her. Because when Bennett and Maggie enter the room Lainey wants nothing to do with anyone other than the two of them. These three make my world go round. Every daggone day.
Here's what else is happening in your world lady ...

How Big Are You?

No official updates on your growth chart. You'll have your 9 month check up next month and we'll know more on your stats. As of now your 6 month well visit was 5.3.16 -
  • Weight: 16 pounds 3 oz ~ 55%
  • Height: 27.25 inches ~ 95%
  • Head: 17.25 ~ 90%
What's Your Temperament?

You are the happiest nugget. You want to be talked to and paid attention to, and constantly fed. But as long as those requirements are met you are 100% satisfied. You still, have yet to meet a stranger and smile at just about everyone. You will let just about anyone hold you too. You love being the center of attention and make sure to include yourself in conversations :)

What Are You Eating?
You're eating 2-3 bottles a day (always a morning and nighttime bottle and an occasionally midday bottle) and 3 meals a day plus snacks. You LOVE to eat. Love love it.

Food schedule is currently:
  • You eat an 8oz bottle when you wake up in the morning
  • breakfast - usually a scrambled egg or banana/peanut butter/yogurt mash up
  • lunch - two squeezie pouches or whatever mama is eating/small fruits
  • a midday bottle or snack (yogurt, soft snack bar, puffs, etc)
  • table food or 1-2 pouches of food for dinner,
  • and then you have a nighttime bottle before bed and sometimes only eat a couple of ounces before snoozing off to dreamland
What Are you Sporting?

You've graduated to #3 diapers and still Pamper's people. We also had to start adding in baby dry diapers for nighttime because you were soaking through your diaper and your clothes and sleep sack mid-way through the night. Those have kept things much better!

You're in all 9 month clothes and even some 12 month items. You still rarely wear shoes, but have started sporting some baby mocs.  And this month you officially started wearing your first pony! Melt my heart, adorable!

How Are You Sleeping?

You're a great sleeper and beyond ready for bed at night. Our only frustration with you is you are an EARLY riser. Occasionally you'll let us snooze until 6-7 am, but for the most part you're up before 6 o'clock. Happy as can be and eager to start the day!

You're wearing a sleep slack at night and you are a belly sleeper through and through. We lay you down on your back in hopes you'll stay that way but within minutes you roll over and you're knocked on your belly.
Your routine goes a little something like this (it can vary plus or minus an hour depending on the day ... but this is pretty close):
  • 6:00am wake up - so happy and smiley - 8 oz bottle
  • 8:00am - nap in crib 1.5 hours
  • 9:30am - breakfast (yogurt, scrambled egg, banana, etc)
  • 1:00pm - lunch (baby food, banana and peanut butter, small cut up berries/veggies, etc)
  • 1:30pm - nap (alongside you brother - yay for freetime!)
  • 3:00pm - 4 oz bottle (if needed, or puff snack)
  • 5:30-6pm - dinner - 1-2 pouches of baby food or table food if possible
  • 7:30pm - bath time, pj's, sleep sack
  • 8pm - bedtime - 8 oz bottle - sleep in your crib
Lainey Likes + Dislikes:

Dislikes:
  • When the food is all gone :(
  • Being in one spot for too long
  • Not being part of the action
  • Post bath/pre-bedtime bottle - she is hungry and sleepy

  • Food! Oh my does this girl like her food.
  • Bath time/the pool

You are wearing pretty ponytails all over the place. And this was your first one ever. I die.

You got your piggies painted!
You started saying "DaDa" - no "MaMa" yet but I know you'll wise up and get there soon!
You celebrated the 4th of July!

Cute Campers

This year for Father's Day the kids and I gifted Shane a little outdoor gear. For the record, we are by no means a camping family. We have a lake house and go outside often, but there is always AC involved. Haha. But Bennett and Shane had talked several times about actually camping and had read some books that peaked little man's interest.

So, when I was trying to think of ideas to get for Hubs this year I decided to get him a little something to help the boys, well, be boys! Bennett and I went to Dick's sporting goods and checked out all of the fun things and then I narrowed down the items and let Bennett actually choose the final gift and choose the colors. We ended up with a tent, a sleeping bag for daddy (Bennett said Daddy loved green), a youth sleeping bag for Bennett (he chose blue), and a lantern to make all of their nighttime dreams come true. (FYI most of these items are 50% off right now if you're in need of any last minute summer gifts and or you want to buy them for this fall/Christmas!)

Shane headed outside to set everything up and I couldn't tell who was more excited, Shane or Bennett! But really! A little boy at heart, always. I love that about him.

We got little man all cleaned up and he thought it was so fun to play outside in his PJs. Such a little rule breaker :) - if you know our son, that couldn't be more opposite from the truth about our little Bennett. He LOVES to follow rules.
And he picked me a flower. Geeze I love him.
But then he was off to help daddy. And I was quickly forgotten :)
And couldn't wait to head inside!
I was sent to schlep firewood for roasting marshmallows. Don't send a woman to do a man's job when she's trying to document photos. Or this is what you will get. And you will like it.
He loved the shadows on the walls. And the stories he was telling were hysterical!
Childhood is nothing short of magical.

And when you have a daddy as special as his, it's even more magical. Love these two so much.

Shortly after, I headed inside (ahem, hello A.C. you're nice and those boys are crazy) and left them to their shenanigans.
They lit the fire,
Roasted marshmallows,

And tucked themselves away into the tent with tons of books, funny stories, and lots of wrestling matches that lasted them well into the night. They stayed outside all night and joined the gals around 5:30 the next morning when the sprinklers and sunlight got them :) hehe. Sweet summertime.
